Seeking "Luxury" Travel, in Madagascar
“Luxury travel in Madagascar”… one of our early google searches, an opening gambit if you will, but not nearly as fruitful a search as you might expect (or might hope).
While Madagascar has been on the tourist radar for a long time (not on the beaten path, obviously, but not that far from it), its more high end market is very much at its nascent stages. A few luxurious properties exist, particularly beach resorts in the northwest on the islands around Nosy Be and on the Anjajavy Peninsula, and more recently two luxury tented camps in the south near Fort Dauphin. But in the majority of tourist destinations within Madagascar, the luxury sector has yet to find a foothold.
With this in mind, we happily resign ourselves to the “comfortably midrange” for most of the trip.
We will be travelling to three regions in mainland Madagascar, and will be staying in the best properties in each destination, but with expectations firmly in check – we are travelling to Madagascar for the wildlife and the landscapes, not the thread count (see “Why travel to Madagascar”). At the end of our journey, we will enjoy a few days on Tsarabanjina, an island resort in the north, to recharge our luxury batteries.
We’ll keep you posted…
