Returning to India

Our latest travel itinerary is pretty well a pure wildlife adventure – we are heading back to India, this time to focus almost exclusively on seeing and photographing tigers! (We hope!).

A Wedding Weekend on the North Island, New Zealand

We are in Hamilton, New Zealand for the wedding of Mel, D's long time Team Member, to Fraser, Mel's long time beau.  Amongst the abundance of wonders that is New Zealand, Hamilton, whilst an eminently pleasant town, is unlikely to rate as a travel destination in itself.  So while we are in the region, we are going to make the most of our extended weekend, exploring the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, Hobbiton, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and Rotorua.

Southern Ocean Lodge, Kangaroo Island, Australia

We are talking as we drive – about holidays, where to go and how to do more of them.  The road is gravel and punctuated by kangaroos in the waning afternoon light.  Suddenly we are at the beach – a carpark, a campervan, a towel-clad couple returning from a swim.  Fortunately we had been warned by our hospitable car rental gentleman – “if you hit the beach, you’ve gone too far”.  We retrace our route.  Shortly we come to the small blue sign pointing us in the right direction – inconspicuous, but obvious enough when one is supposed to be looking specifically for a small blue sign.  We turn off and soon find ourselves at an elaborate entrance gate, incongruous in the scrubby dunes but an emphatic statement – welcome to Southern Ocean Lodge.

Kangaroo Island, South Australia

The view from Southern Ocean Lodge is hypnotic…  From every angle, from every room, the view of the lodge’s namesake ocean extends to the horizon.  It is mesmerising and inescapable…  plus the food is sublime...

Eventually we manage to drag ourselves away from the indulgence of Southern Ocean Lodge to explore more of Kangaroo Island.  KI has built upon its dramatic scenery and famous wildlife to become a worldclass destination for adventure and food too.

Parc National Andasibe Mantadia, Madagascar

We have ventured to Madagascar for its iconic wildlife, and our first destination is Andasibe Mantadia National Park. Just four hours drive from the capital, it is a perfect introduction to the lemurs, chameleons, lizards, snakes, frogs and all sorts of weird and wonderful beetles that populate the forests of this colourful country.

Venturing to Madagascar

Having had Madagascar on our travel list for longer than we can remember, we were finally able to lock in a trip to this beautiful and surprising island!  We confess to some trepidation, the recent popular news out of the country was slightly less than inviting and prompted many doubtful questions and comments from friends and family when announcing our next destination.  But if you can look past the headlines (which often serve an ulterior purpose, more on that later) you will discover, as we have, another of the worlds great treasures.

African Safari - Lower Zambezi National Park, Zambia

After several safari visits to Africa we had never actually been lucky enough to see an African leopard.  So hopes were high on this trip to Zambia.  The Lower Zambezi was in particular our biggest hope for that elusive African leopard sighting.  Well, we need not have worried, in our experience, the Lower Zambezi was a veritable haven for a healthy, breeding, thriving leopard population, and almost immediately it felt like we were tripping (almost literally) over these beautiful, most majestic of animals.

African Safari - South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

After Busanga Plains in Kafue National Park, our next Zambian destination is the highly regarded South Luangwa National Park.  While not as well known as reserves in Botswana and South Africa, the South Luangwa is generally considered a great unsung safari destination, with incredible game viewing, superb guiding and a small number of exceptional safari camps.
